Water main bursts in south Minneapolis, affecting businesses and interrupting traffic

By Zach Lebowitz

A water main break flooded a building and the streets of a busy south Minneapolis intersection Thursday, causing two business closures, MPR reported.

The burst spilled more than a foot of quickly freezing water on streets and alleys near the corner of West 50th Street and Penn Avenue South, CBS reported.

The Paperback Exchange bookstore and Italian restaurant Terzo announced closure because of damage to the building that houses their businesses on the ground floor, MPR reported. The building was evacuated of three residents who live in the apartments above the businesses, CBS reported.

The Minneapolis Fire Department said they responded after a fire alarm was triggered inside Terzo at 3:30 a.m., and public works crews shut off the flow of water around 8 a.m., the news division reported.

The city of Minneapolis said West 50th Street from Penn Avenue to Oliver Avenue South will remain closed to vehicle traffic until pavement repairs likely Friday, CBS reported.
