University of Minnesota to abide by court orders of ICE operations on campus

by Zach Lebowitz

University spokesperson Jake Ricker, in an email statement, said the University of Minnesota (UMN) will comply with orders from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the Minnesota Daily.

Ricker's email was quoted by the paper saying “While the University does not have responsibility or an active role in federal officials enforcing federal law or court processes, as a public university and employer, we cannot ignore federal court orders or subpoenas.”

This follows President Trump's orders on immigration to allow ICE officers to enter areas such as churches and schools, while the administration aims for at least 75 arrests per day, the paper reported.

The student group UMN Students for a Democratic Society responded with a statement via Instagram announcing a protest in front of Coffman Student Union, which will be held Thursday. "This is a shameful mark in the history of our university in which our administration is actively, preemptively, choosing to severely endanger and prosecute its own students," the post reads.

The Minnesota Daily reported, quoting Mayor Jacob Frey at a press conference Tuesday, who said Minneapolis officials will not be complying with ICE operations, due to a separation ordinance that states those such as city officials and police officers will not collect information on who is or is not documented. "As for cooperation with ICE, the answer is no.”
