State of emergency declared after earthquakes on Santorini

By Zach Lebowitz

A state of emergency was declared on the Greek island of Santorini by civil protection authorities after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the island Wednesday night, The Guardian reported.

"More than 12,000 people have fled by boat and plane since the tremors intensified at the weekend, with few tourists now believed to be on the island," the newspaper reported.

Officials said the state of emergency will remain in effect until March 3 to address emergency needs and manage the aftermath, BBC news reported.

No major damage has been reported on Santorini so far, but precautions are being taken with additional medical personnel, police officers, soldiers and military vehicles arriving on the island, according to the news division.

According to The Guardian, experts have not reached a consensus on if the earthquake is a precursor to a larger tremor that could trigger a tsunami or if seismic activity will decrease.
