By Zach Lebowitz

Art historians found a concealed painting of an unknown woman beneath Pablo Picasso's "Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto," CNN reported.

The outlines of an additional portrait were revealed when the Courtauld Institute of Art in London examined the 1901 painting with infrared and x-ray imaging ahead of a Feb. 14. exhibition, the news organization reported.

Barnaby Wright, deputy head of the Courtauld Gallery, said in a statement the surface of the painting's marks and textures had long raised suspicion of another work underneath, The Washington Post reported.

“You can even start to make out her shape just by looking at the painting with the naked eye,” Write said, according to the paper.

The Washington post reported that similar discoveries have been found in other Picasso paintings in recent years. A portrait under “The Blind Man’s Meal” and two layers of images under "The Soup" were found in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
